Essay – Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore was a great poet, writer, and thinker of India. He was born on 7th May 1861 in Kolkata. He is one of the most famous people in Indian history. I admire him because he was so talented and did so many things in his life. He was not only a poet but also a painter, philosopher, and a music composer.
Tagore wrote our national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” and I really enjoy reciting it everyday during school. The song brings me pride about our nation. He was the first Indian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. He got it for his book of poems called Gitanjali, which means “Song Offerings”. He also started a school called Shantiniketan which means “abode of peace”. It was different from regular schools, here students learned in a natural environment under the trees. He believed learning should be joyful and not just about exams.
Rabindranath Tagore also loved nature and children. Many of his stories and poems are about nature, love, peace, and kindness. One of my favorite stories by him is Kabuliwala which is about a little girl and a kind man from Afghanistan. His writings often teach us important lessons about life. He believed in peace and brotherhood. He didn’t like the British rule in India but he wanted to fight it through ideas and non-violence. He returned his knighthood after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre to protest against the British government.
Rabindranath Tagore died on 7th August 1941 but his writings and songs are still alive today. I think we should all learn from him and try to be creative, kind and brave like he was.
Rabindranath Tagore truly was a gem of India and I feel lucky to learn about such a great person.
