Essay – Buddha Purnima
Buddha Purnima is a very important festival for people who follow Buddhism but it is also respected by many others around the world. It celebrates the birth, enlightenment (nirvana) and death (parinirvana) of Gautama Buddha. All this event are believed to have happened on the same day. This special day usually falls in April or May depending on the full moon.
Gautama Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha in Lumbini which is now in Nepal. He lived in a royal palace and had everything he wanted. But one day he saw an old man, a sick person and a dead body. These sights made him think deeply about life, pain and death. He left his palace, family and riches to find the true meaning of life. After years of meditation he gained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya. From then on he became known as the Buddha which means “The Enlightened One”.
On Buddha Purnima people remember his teachings and try to follow the path of peace, kindness and truth. His main teachings are called the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path which guide people to live a good and peaceful life, free from greed and hatred.
People celebrate Buddha Purnima by visiting temples offering prayers and doing kind acts. They light lamps, offer flowers and listen to teachings of the Buddha. Many people also donate food, clothes and money to the poor on this day. In Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar are important places in Buddha’s life—special events and prayers are held.
Buddha Purnima is not just a religious event but a reminder for all of us to live with love, patience and wisdom. In today’s world, where there is so much stress and anger, following the path of Buddha can bring peace to our minds and hearts.
Let us celebrate Buddha Purnima by spreading happiness and doing good things for others. That is the best way to honour Lord Buddha.
