The King’s Dream
One fine morning, King Krishnadevaraya came to his royal court looking quite serious. All the ministers stood up as he entered, but he didn’t smile or greet anyone. His face was filled with deep thought.
After taking his seat, he said, “Last night, I had a strange dream. I saw a beautiful golden mango hanging from the royal mango tree in the palace garden. A divine voice told me that whoever eats that mango will live forever!”
Everyone in the court gasped. A golden mango that gives eternal life? It sounded magical!
The king continued, “But when I woke up and went to the garden, the golden mango was missing! Someone has stolen it!” His eyes narrowed as he looked around the court. “I want the thief caught immediately!”
The ministers looked at one another, completely confused. After all, it was just a dream, not real! But none of them dared to question the king.
Just then, Tenali Rama stepped forward, hiding a smile. “Your Majesty,” he said calmly, “this is a serious matter indeed. But before we begin the search, I must ask something important.”
The king nodded. “Yes, go ahead.”
Tenali Rama bowed and asked, “May I know where the mango tree from your dream is planted? I would like to examine it closely.”
The entire court burst into laughter! Even the king couldn’t help but smile.
Rama continued playfully, “Your Majesty, since the mango and the tree existed only in your dream, I believe the thief must also be from your dream!”
The king laughed heartily. “You are right, Rama! I got carried away by my dream. You’ve opened my eyes.”
Everyone in the court relaxed, and the mood lightened. Thanks to Tenali Rama’s clever thinking and sense of humour, a big confusion was solved in a smart and funny way.
