If Earth Could Speak: Our Responsibilities
My Beloved Small Ones,
I am your Mother Earth. All of you belong to my vast lap, which has always been ready to serve and support your lives. I have acted as a nurturer and nourisher for each and every one of you. My life-giving water enabled the tiniest organisms to come into existence in my lap. I have served as a source of life, providing the perfect balance of air, water, and sunlight—all that you need for survival.
I have witnessed the progress of human civilisation with my own eyes. My landforms are the foundation of flora and fauna. The enchanting forests, accompanied by the sparkling, transparent oceans, have always contributed to the beauty of my world. My lap is the serene abode of many animals, birds, trees, and shrubs. My primary goal is to maintain harmony and peace among all the small ones residing in my abode. The natural resources I possess are meant for the well-being of all my inhabitants, and I have never expected anything in return.
Today, I want to express my needs. My sparkling rivers were meant for you to drink from and use for your daily chores and hygiene. They were never meant to be dumping grounds for chemicals and waste discharged by factories. My forests were created to enhance the beauty of my vast abode and make it an enchanting place for you to explore. Today, however, my beautiful landscapes have turned into ashes and concrete roads. Fires rise high, reducing my trees to ashes. Each and every strike of an axe brings tears to my eyes.
My soil is losing its vitality year after year as it becomes contaminated with pesticides. My once joyful and peaceful world of fauna is now filled with animals locked behind bars, struggling to survive against numerous threats. Their numbers are declining, pushing many of my beloved species towards extinction.
I am growing hotter every year because of the harmful activities of the human race. The global temperature rise of 1.5°C has become a critical threshold that we are dangerously close to exceeding. I face heat waves and struggle with problems such as rising sea levels every day.
I have never asked for anything in return, and I never will. All I want is for you to take care of everything I have given you. I want to be as beautiful and vibrant as I once was. If I can no longer function properly, the survival of the human race itself may be in danger.
Even the simplest practices can help overcome the biggest challenges. Plastic is a major threat to me. Respect my soil and water, and do not pollute them with waste. My sunlight will continue to shine, but coal is a finite resource that will eventually run out. Use your technological advancements wisely to develop biodegradable alternatives for everyday life. Respect the boundaries between the animal kingdom and human settlements, allowing my wildlife to live freely in its natural habitat.
“I have everything to give you, nothing to take,
But preserve my resources for your own sake.”
