Essay – The Taj Mahal

Last week, I had the most unforgettable experience of my life when we visited the Taj Mahal with my parents. I had read about it in my history book and seen it on TV, but nothing could prepare me for how beautiful it looked in real life. It was like stepping into a fairy tale!

The Taj Mahal is in Agra, which is in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a gift of love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal who died while during child birth. The emperor was so heartbroken that he decided to build the most beautiful tomb in the world in her memory. That is why the Taj Mahal is known as the symbol of eternal love.

As we walked through the red sandstone gateway, I got my very first full view of the Taj Mahal. I gasped, it was huge, shining and as white as snow. The white marble glowed under the morning sun, and the blue sky made it look even more magical. There were four tall minarets standing around it like royal guards and in front there was a long water pools with fountains reflecting the Taj like a mirror.

When we walked closer I saw the intricate carvings on the marble walls. There were beautiful flower patterns and even verses from the Quran written in calligraphy using black stone. It was hard to believe that people had carved all of that by hand more than 350 years ago!

The main hall was quiet and peaceful. The ceiling was very high and in the center were the tombs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. Our guide told us that their real graves are buried deeper underground and are not shown to the public. Even inside the walls were decorated with colorful stones shaped like flowers all shining under soft lights.

I learned that it took over 20 years to complete the Taj Mahal and more than 20,000 workers helped build it. They brought marble from faraway places like Rajasthan and even used precious stones from different countries. It is truly a masterpiece of art, architecture and love.

Standing there I felt a strange mix of emotions. I felt amazed by how humans can build something so perfect and I also felt touched by the story of love behind it. Even though centuries have passed the Taj Mahal still stands tall, reminding us of love, beauty and the power of memory. The Taj Mahal is not just a monument it is a poem written in marble, a gift of love that has become a treasure for the whole world. I feel very lucky to have seen it with my own eyes.
