The Last Tree

I rushed over and said, “I can’t let this happen. This is the last tree in this neighbourhood.”

One of the workers said, “It’s going to good use. It can make thousands of matchsticks, furniture, and many other things.”

I said, “But those matchsticks can destroy thousands of trees.”

They replied, “It’s our job. We have to do it.”

I said, “Just give me 2 hours, and I’ll be back.”

They looked at each other and said, “Fine. Not over a minute more, or else I’ll cut the tree.”

I rushed back home and called all my friends and family. I told them that some people were cutting down the tree. They said, “There is nothing we can do to help.”

But I said, “If you don’t want to help, then don’t. I can do it on my own.”

I made presentations, posters, and banners, and did my research. After a while, others joined and helped.

At exactly 1:57, the whole community formed a circle around the tree and lifted their posters and signs. Finally, I stepped ahead and said, “Don’t you think the Earth is incomplete without greenery? Don’t you know the consequences of your actions? Don’t you think that trees are the main source of oxygen? It is our responsibility to take care of them.”

I sighed and said, “It’s your choice now.”

They felt ashamed, backed off, and said, “We are sorry and ashamed.”

I said, “It’s never too late.”

I learned that doing the right thing is not easy, but it is important.
