Lilly : The Water Hero
My name is Lilly. I am 9 years old. I live in a small village with my grandma and grandpa. We don’t have much money, but we love each other very much.
In our village, water is very precious. Every day, I wake up early to help my grandma carry water from the old village well. Sometimes, the well is almost dry. That makes me feel scared and sad. What if one day there is no water at all?
one afternoon, after school, I sat under my favourite tree. It had just rained. I saw water dripping from the roof of our school. It made little splashes on the ground. I heard the ding sound, and an idea got stuck in my mind.
I asked myself. “What if we catch the rain before it hits the ground?”
I ran to my teacher to talk about my idea. She smiled and said, “That’s a great idea. Lilly, it is called rainwater harvesting.”
We told the head of the village. Some people didn’t believe us. But my teacher helped me show everyone. We put buckets under the roof. We added pipes to send the rainwater into big tanks. The next time it rained, the buckets filled up fast. Everyone cheered and smiled.
Now, we use the rainwater to wash clothes, clean the floors, and water the plants. We are careful not to waste clean water anymore. My grandma hugged me and said, “Lilly, you are our water hero.” I felt very happy. I smiled and said, “Water is like magic. We just must save it.” And from that day on, our village was never afraid of running out of water again.
