Essay – Vande Mataram
One of the most potent and poignant songs in Indian history is “Vande Mataram.” The phrase which honours our India means “I bow to thee, Mother.” It makes me feel pleased to be Indian every time I hear it.
Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote the song in Bengali and Sanskrit. It was included in his well-known book Anandamath which he wrote while we were under the British rule. The song inspired everyone from all nooks and corners of the country to fight for our country’s independence.
It was sung for the first time in a major political assembly by Rabindranath Tagore at the 1896 session of the Indian National Congress. The song beautifully describes India as a loving mother, full of natural beauty—with her green fields, clear rivers, and blue skies. It shows how deeply Indians love their land and are ready to do anything for her. It demonstrates how much we as Indians cherish our homeland and are prepared to lay down our lives for the country.
It became a symbol of unity and courage during India’s freedom movement. The Swadeshi movement made it the heartbeat of the revolution. As protesters marched faced police brutality and filled British jails the chant of “Vande Mataram” became an act of defiance. The British recognizing its immense unifying force eventually banned its public recitation an action that only amplified its symbolic importance as an anthem of courage and resistance across India.
In 1950 “Vande Mataram” was given the honour of being our National Song. and whenever it is sung, we all stand up with respect. It reminds us of the sacrifices made by countless heroes for our independence.
Whenever I hear “Vande Mataram” in school or on Independence Day I sing proudly with all my heart. It reminds me that we should always love and respect our country and work hard to make it better.
In my opinion, every Indian child should know and understand the meaning of “Vande Mataram.” It teaches us to love, respect, and serve our country with pride and devotion.
Vande Mataram! Jai Hind!
