Diwali – The Festival Of Lights
Diwali is my favorite festival because it is so colorful and filled with joy. It’s known as the ‘Festival of Lights’ because people light up their homes with diyas and also decorate with lights. The entire country glows and it feels truly magical.
The story behind Diwali is about good winning over evil. In Ramayana, Lord Rama returned to his kingdom of Ayodhya after 14 years in exile and the people celebrated his homecoming by lighting lamps. We celebrate Diwali by doing similar things today by praying, lighting lamps and celebrating with family and friends.
Prepartion for Diwali starts days in advance. Everyone in the family come together and clean the house. I love to decorate our verandah with rangoli, which are colourful designs made on the floor with powder colors. I love doing Rangoli and is one of my favorite parts because I get to be creative and try new designs each year.
On Diwali night we all dress up in new clothes. My family does a small puja together to thank God for all the good things in our lives. After that we light diyas and place them all around the house.
After the puja we have a delicious feast with sweets and sometimes even special Diwali dishes like puris and chole. Sharing sweets with neighbors and friends is also a tradition. Then we all get together and burst firecrackers in the night.
The best part of Diwali for me is spending time with my family. Diwali is not only a festival of lights but also a festival of happiness, togetherness and love. It reminds us to be thankful and spread light in each other’s lives.
