The Greedy Dog
Once there was a dog who lived near a village. He was thin and always hungry because he didn’t have a home or a master. One hot afternoon, he was walking through the village, sniffing around for something to eat.
Suddenly, he saw a butcher throwing a bone outside the shop. The bone had little bits of meat on it. The dog’s eyes sparkled with joy and he thought that it must be his lucky day. He barked happily and ran to grab the bone. He picked it up in his mouth and wagged his tail excitedly.
“I’m going to find a quiet place and enjoy this yummy bone” he thought. So he started walking towards the forest. On the way, he had to cross a small wooden bridge over a river.
As he walked on the bridge, he looked down and saw the water flowing. But what really surprised him was that he saw another dog in the water holding a bone too! He didn’t know it was just his own reflection.
The greedy dog’s eyes grew big. “That dog’s bone looks even bigger than mine! I want that one too!” he thought.
Without thinking, the greedy dog barked loudly, “Grrr! Give me that bone!” But as soon as he opened his mouth to bark, his own bone slipped out and fell into the river with a splash!
“NOOOO!” he cried. He looked into the water, but now there was nothing, no other dog, no bone, just ripples in the river. His tummy growled again and he sat down sadly.
“I was too greedy,” he whispered. “If I had just been happy with what I had, I would still have my bone.”
He walked away slowly, his tail down and his heart heavy.
Moral : Don’t be greedy. You might lose even what you already have.
