My Sunday Trip to the Gateway of India

Last Sunday was super fun and exciting because I went to the Gateway of India in Mumbai with my cousins Riya and Ronak who had come all the way from Surat to visit us for the weekend. As a family we decided to take them to one of Mumbai’s most famous landmark ‘The Gateway of India’.

We started early in the morning to avoid traffic. The weather was perfect as per Mumbai standards like not too hot and not too sweaty. My cousins who had never seen the Gateway before were just as excited as I was. We played games and cracked jokes all the way in the car. When we reached Colaba we saw the Gateway from a distance. It looked huge, grand and beautiful! The tall arch, the yellow stones and the Arabian Sea behind it made the place look like something from a movie.

The Gateway of India was built in 1924 to welcome King George V and Queen Mary when they visited India. I felt like I was walking through history! There were lots of tourists clicking photos, just like us. We took so many selfies. There was a street photographer who was charging 200 rupees for a group photo and for two prints. My dad decided that a family photo is a must and we took a big group picture of all of us with the magnificent Gateway behind.

I really enjoyed watching the boats that were lined up near the Gateway. My dad told us those boats go to the famous Elephanta Caves. We didn’t have time for the boat ride this time but my cousins and I all agreed we should definitely come back for it on their next visit. That would be another adventure!

After spending time admiring the Gateway we walked to a nearby restaurant for lunch. We went to the famous Leopold Cafe. It was my first time there and I loved the old style look of the place. It felt like we had stepped into a storybook! We ordered so many yummy things like butter naan, paneer tikka, biryani and lots of cold drinks to beat the heat. I even shared a big chocolate milkshake with my cousin Riya. We were so full after lunch but very happy!

Then we crossed the road to see the amazing Taj Hotel. It looked like a real-life palace with its grand architecture! As always we took a lot of more photos there. Before leaving we bought some souvenirs like keychains and magnets to remember our fun trip.

On the way back home, my dad took us through the scenic route via Marine Drive and then crossed the super impressive Bandra-Worli Sea Link. My cousins were absolutely amazed by the vast sea on both sides and the huge white cables of the bridge reaching up to the sky. We opened the car windows and felt the cool breeze on our faces. It felt like we were flying over the water!

By the time we reached home, it was evening. We were all tired but our heads and hearts were full of happy memories. Spending time with my cousins and exploring Mumbai’s iconic spots, enjoying delicious food and driving on the awesome Sea Link made it one of the best Sundays of my life. I hope my cousins visit again soon so we can go on another adventure and maybe even visit the Elephanta Caves!
