Mother Hen And Chicks

The room was quiet, the lights dim. Meenu lay under her blanket, eyes still filled with tears. Her mother gently brushed her hair back and said:

“Do you want to hear a story, Meenu?

Meenu sniffled  and nodded.

“Okay-Once upon a time ,in a little farm ,there lived a kind and caring Mother Hen. She had 12 fluffy, chirpy chicks who followed her every where. Every day mother hen gave them food, kept them warm under her wings and clucked gently to comfort them. The chicks felt safety and happy with her.

But one day ,something strange happened. Mother hen suddenly flapped her wings and clucked loudly. “Go  find your food!”

She didn’t let them cuddle under her wings. She didn’t feed them like before. She looked angry.

The little chicks were scared .One chick ran far away ,crying ‘Amma doesn’t love us’

He ran until he reached the pond ,where an old frog sat quietly .The chick told the frog every thing. The frog smiled gently and said, ’Oh little one ,your mother still loves you so much. But now ,you must learn to peck your own food, you should find your own way. That’s how you’ll grow strong. Like her.’

The chick blinked. “Really?”

“Yes, “said the frog.” Sometimes love looks like a push. Not a hug.” The little chick thought for a moment ,then smiled. “May be Amma was helping us after all”. And from that day on the chick began to peck on their own.

The mother looked at her daughter  and kissed her forehead .She said “Sometimes mothers might sound angry. They will scold or say hard things. But inside they were just like that hen trying to help their little one to grow strong and beautiful”

Meenu didn’t speak. she just moved closer and rested her head on Mothers chest and her mother hugged her just like the hen once did.
