The Bird And The Monkey
Long ago, in a thick and beautiful forest filled with tall trees, singing birds and chattering animals, there lived a little bird in a big tree near a river. The bird was hardworking and clever. She had spent many days building her nest, carefully weaving dry twigs, soft leaves and grass to make it warm and strong. Her nest sat high in the branches where it was safe from most dangers.
As the monsoon season arrived, dark clouds covered the sky and the sound of thunder echoed through the forest. The wind blew hard and rain began to fall heavily. All the animals ran to find shelter.
Not far from the tree, a monkey was wandering through the forest. He had no home. Unlike the bird, the monkey had never cared to build himself a shelter. Whenever the sun was out, he would jump from tree to tree, play around and enjoy himself. But when the rain came, he had nowhere to go.
Now he was cold, wet and miserable. His teeth chattered and his body shivered as the rain poured down on him. Looking around, he saw the large tree where the little bird lived. Hoping to escape the rain, the monkey rushed toward the tree and sat under it.
High above, the little bird sat comfortably in her dry, cozy nest. She looked down and saw the monkey sitting under the tree, soaked from head to toe.
Feeling sorry for him, the bird said kindly,
“Oh dear Monkey, I feel sad to see you like this—cold and wet. You have strong arms and legs and you’re smart, too. Why don’t you build yourself a nice shelter like I did? Then you wouldn’t have to suffer in the rain.”
She said this out of care, hoping the monkey would understand and prepare better for the future.
But the monkey didn’t take it well. He was already upset and uncomfortable and hearing the bird’s words made him angry. He thought she was mocking him or trying to show off.
His face twisted in rage as he shouted,
“You silly bird! Sitting up there, dry and comfortable! Who are you to tell me what to do? Do you think you’re better than me just because you built a nest?”
Before the bird could say another word, the monkey jumped up in fury. He climbed the tree quickly and reached the branch where the bird’s nest was built. With his strong hands, he tore the nest apart—twig by twig, leaf by leaf. He threw everything down to the ground.
The little bird was terrified. She quickly flew away to save herself, watching helplessly as her home was destroyed.
The rain continued to fall and now, both the monkey and the bird had no shelter.
