Essay – Pongal

Pongal is a very important and happy festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu. It is mainly a harvest festival and is celebrated to thank nature, the Sun God and farmers for giving us food. Pongal is celebrated in the month of January and lasts for four days.

The first day is called Bhogi. We clean our houses and throw away old things. This shows that we are leaving behind the old and welcoming new beginnings. It is done to make our home look fresh and neat. The second day is Thai Pongal which is the most important day. On this day we cook a sweet dish called Pongal. This dish is made using rice, milk, jaggery and lots of dry fruits and nuts. When the milk boils over, everyone shouts “Pongalo Pongal!” which represents happiness and prosperity.

The third day is Mattu Pongal which is for cows and bulls. Farmers decorate them with paint, bells and flowers. These animals are most important to farmers because they help in farming and provide milk. The fourth day is Kaanum Pongal which is my favourite. We visit our relatives, have fun and sometimes enjoy picnic.

During Pongal people wear new clothes, draw beautiful kolams in front of their houses and share sweets with neighbours. I like Pongal because it teaches us to respect nature, animals and farmers. It is a colourful festival full of joy, gratitude and togetherness.
