Essay – Holi Festival
Holi is my favorite festival because it is full of fun, colours and happiness! It is also called the festival of colours because on this day people throw coloured powders and water on each other. It is celebrated in India and many other places where Indians live.
Holi comes in March and it marks the arrival of spring. The night before Holi we all gather and burn a big bonfire called Holika Dahan. My grandmother told me the story of Prahlad and Holika. Prahlad was a kind and good boy who always prayed to Lord Vishnu. His father who was a King was very cruel and did not like that Prahlad worshipping God instead of him. His aunt was Holika who tried to harm him but she got burned instead. This teaches us that good always wins over evil.
The next morning after the bonfire is the most fun part. Everyone wears old clothes and goes outside with gulal, water balloons and pichkaris. My entire society turns into a big playground of colours. All of us love running around and throwing colours at everyon. Naturally we get drenched in coloured water. We also throw water filled balloons at each other or spray water with our fancy pichkaris. I have a huge one in which the water is stored like a back pack.
Most people play Holi with natural colours made from flowers and herbs so that our skin doesn’t get harmed. One of the best things about Holi is that everyone joins in the fun whether you are young or old, friends or even strangers. We put colours on each other’s faces. It is a time when all differences are forgotten, and everyone celebrates together.
But Holi is not just about colours but also about delicious food! My mom and grandma make yummy sweets like gujiya which is like a samosa filled with sweet khoya and dry fruits. We also eat malpua, dahi vada and namak pare. But the most popular is a special drink called thandai which is made from milk, almonds and some spices.
Holi is a day when everyone forgets their worries and just enjoys. Even strangers smile at each other and put colour on each other’s faces. I love Holi because it brings people closer and makes the world more colourful!
