The Boy Who Was a Deer

Chapter 1: The Lost Deer

It was the time of British rule. In a small forest called Kaduvanad in Uttar Pradesh, there
were many people living in the forest.

In the deepest part of the forest lived a herd of deers. There were thousands of them.
Among them, there was a little deer – Nakul.

His parents were very attentive as some British soldiers could hunt him. But Nakul was very
naughty. He would never listen to his parents.

He would run around the forest. Suddenly the herd stopped walking. There was silence all
over, followed by a loud scream. The British soldiers were attacking the herd. The whole
herd had run away. But poor Nakul did not know where to go.

He also lost his parents. He tried running with the herd, but could not catch up.

Chapter 2: The Hideout

Nakul was walking almost for a day without food or water. Suddenly he saw a cave. He
decided to stay there for a night. He made sure that no wild animals entered the cave. It
was almost night. Nakul went to sleep.

The very next morning he started walking in search of his herd. He walked for hours but he
did not find any sign of his herd. Finally he came across a river. There were many wood
pieces floating through the river. Nakul jumped into one of them. Soon he was also floating
through the river without knowing where the river led him to.

After some time the flow got faster. Now he knew that the river was leading into a waterfall.
He jumped out of the wood piece into the river.

He swam and swam and finally reached the shore.

Chapter 3: The God of the Jungle

Nakul began walking in search of a place to rest. His eyes were shutting in tiredness.
Suddenly he saw a statue of a god. Near that there was a wise old owl.

He asked the owl if he knew something about the statue. The wise old owl said, “ I was
waiting for this moment.” Nakul did not understand what the owl was saying.

Dear little deer, the owl started, “I was waiting here, guarding this statue, for someone to
come.”

Nakul then asked why he was waiting.

The wise old owl replied, “I have a story to tell you.”

Chapter 4: The Story of a Family

The owl started telling the story:

Long ago, in that forest village, lived a family. They did not have any children.

One day, they were roaming through the jungle sadly, when I saw them. I heard all their
problems. From that day on, I was waiting for someone to come here because this statue is
not an ordinary one. It has the power to turn an animal or a human into anything. So, if you
wish, I can give that family a good life by changing you into a human baby.

Chapter 5: The Transformation

Nakul thought for a while, and then said yes.

The owl led him to the statue. Then, the owl told him to stand in front of the statue. The owl
chanted some mantras and pushed Nakul into the statue.

Nakul felt like he was falling into a volcano. It was very deep that he could not even breathe.
After the steep fall, he felt that he fell on something soft.

Then, somebody took him up. He was then a newborn baby boy. His parents were very
excited to see the baby boy.

From that day on, they lived a happy life. After some years, the boy grew up and became a
warrior and protected his forest and his parents from getting even a tiny wound.

Chapter 6: The War

The East Indian Company had decided to attack the forest village.

Everyone in the jungle knew about it and were ready for the war. The war had started, and
the warriors of the jungle fought bravely. Finally, they won the war.

When they were celebrating, the warrior saw a herd of deers which looked familiar to him.
After thinking for a while, he realised that it was his old deer family.

Chapter 7: The Meet

When the warrior went near them, at first, the herd were scared. Then, he told them that
he was there in this herd long ago as a little deer by name Nakul. His parents quickly
recognised him. They asked him how he became a human. Nakul told them the whole story.

The deer’s were very surprised to hear it.

Then onwards, Nakul, the warrior, lived happily with both his human and deer family
