Essay – Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam – The Missile Man of India
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was one of the greatest leaders India has ever had. He was a scientist, a teacher and the 11th President of India. But more than that, he was a kind and humble man who inspired millions of children like me.
He was born on 15th October 1931 in Rameswaram which is a small town in Tamil Nadu. His family was poor but he was very hard working and curious. As a boy he sold newspapers to support his family but never gave up on his studies. He believed that dreams can come true if we work hard.
Dr. Kalam became a scientist at ISRO and DRDO where he worked on many important projects. He played a big role in India’s missile programs and was popularly known as the Missile Man of India. He also helped in making India a nuclear power.
In 2002 he became the President of India. People loved him and called him the People’s President because he was so friendly and simple. Even after he finished his term, he kept visiting schools and colleges to talk to students.
Dr. Kalam always told young people to dream big and work for the country. One of his most famous quotes is: “Dream, dream, dream. Dreams transform into thoughts and thoughts result in action.”
Sadly, he passed away on 27th July 2015 while giving a speech at a college. Even in his last moments he was doing what he loved which is teaching and inspiring students.
I really admire Dr. Kalam. He showed us that no matter how small your beginnings are you can achieve great things with honesty, hard work and a good heart.
