The Strange Saturday
(It was a Saturday morning. The children had their weekly holiday. Father went to the office. The two children and their mom were comfortably relaxing in a room upstairs, some watching mobiles, laptops, and some reading books. Suddenly, they heard a tremendous sound of some things that seemed to be fallen from a height. The whole family ran downstairs to find the whole room to be very messy, though no one was there.)
Characters :
MOTHER – HAZEL WILLIAMS
FATHER – JOHN WILLIAMS
THEIR DAUGHTER – FRANCESCA WILLIAMS
THEIR SON – JAMES WILLIAMS
THE GHOST – CASPER GHOST
HAZEL: What is this? Who is that person who broke my beautiful showpieces and lamps! Hey! Is someone there?
(There was no answer. The children were scared. Their mom comforted them. Suddenly, the room became hazy and a scary ghost appeared when the haze was vanished. Hazel was still not scared.)
CASPER: (In a tremendous voice) I am the most dangerous ghost in the world of ghosts, the ‘Casper Ghost’. The one who will strife me, will suffer a lot.
HAZEL: Why are you here and what did we trouble to you?
CASPER: You didn’t do anything. But I like to trouble others. And you are my present target.
FRANSESCA AND JAMES: (In a weepy voice) Mom! We are scared.
CASPER: Try to save yourself from me. Or else, you’ll be disappointed on you own luck.
(Francesca and James whispered into Hazel’s ear to talk about their common talks amongst them in a West Sussex language, which they thought that the ghost wouldn’t understand, get confused and at least go for that time.)
FRANSESCA: Mom, him sez duh his is right dangerous, but ‘e en’t. ‘e is doin ‘ithout any scary expressions.
(Mom, he says that he is very dangerous, but he is not. The is doing without any scary expressions.
JAMES: Wunt yer think that’n ‘e is a ‘tas sperits’?
(Do you think that he is a ghost?)
HAZEL: His is a ‘tas sperits’.. Wunt yer that’n ‘arm darmed?
(He is a ghost. Do you think that I am surprised?)
CASPER: (Angrily, stomping his feet) What is going on here? What are you talking about and which language is this? This is irritating me a lot. Stop it!
(The three of them were laughing, and when he was vexed at them, he screamed angrily in a very loud voice and vanished into the thin air, thus ending his first attempt to frighten the Williams family. They again continued with their chores. They had even planned about what to do if he comes again. Their mom cleaned the messy room with a lots of efforts. After sometime, again the Casper came to scare the family for the second time. As soon as he entered, he laughed in a loud and scary voice. The family was ready to execute the plan.)
CASPER: What did you think, I’ll not come again? Your efforts for cleaning the room are wasted. Now let me do some mischief if I am here again.
(No one paid attention to him. They acted as they were busy in their own world. Hazel had made the floor slippery to make it as a prank on the Casper Ghost. They even pushed him while walking or playing and acting as if they were naturally doing all these things.)
CASPER: (Being agitated) Hey! Can’t you see or hear me. Its me, the Casper Ghost. Hey children! Are you not scared to see me? Someone please answer!
(He threw the things here and there, screamed piteously, and tried to disturb them in their work, but it didn’t affect them. They continued their chores. Being agitated because of this, the Casper Ghost ended his second attempt to scare the family. It hurted him so much that he did not scare any family for some days. Their father came at the evening. Hazel told all about the strange Saturday morning.)
JOHN: Is it true? Are you sure that it was actually a ghost?
HAZEL, FRANCESCA, AND JAMES: Yes!
JOHN: So then we need to plan something more to get free from that Casper Ghost. Let’s plan something and execute when the ghost comes. The acting should be very realistic because I’ve heard of him, he is a very dangerous ghost. He can do anything.
(They all decided the best plan and were perfectly ready to execute it on the ghost. He came after many days.)
CASPER: Hey! I’m back. Is anyone there? Hello!
(He checked downstairs, and then upstairs. But he found the whole house empty.)
CASPER: How is it possible? Aren’t they at home?
(No sooner than he said this, all of them came suddenly laughing. They were hiding in their house.)
CASPER: Why are you hiding from me? Are you scared of me? This was to happen. Did you accept now, I am the most dangerous ghost of all!
(The Williams stated to speak in West Sussex language)
HAZEL: ‘e thinks that we are surprised. But us are not.
(He thinks that we are surprised. Bu we are not.
JOHN: Spot on!
(Exactly)
FRANCESCO AND JAMES: Us are not scared!
(We are not scared!)
CASPER: What are you speaking? Tell me! I am getting irritated.
(The Casper Ghost started throwing things on the family. But the family was not scared. They enjoyed this and began to play with him. Taking the advantage of the chance, two of the children went upstairs, slowly and steadily, just as a mouse. They brought a large, white cotton cloth, took a mop, attached the mop with its yarn coloured black and the cloth in such a manner that the yarns appeared as the long hair and the cloth as the long dress. They had even saved a horror sound in a tape recorder, attached a torch at the end of the white cloth, so that it could seem a bit more horror when turned on. They switched off the lights of the whole house, ran down the room swiftly, with the torch turned on and the tape recorder being played at a very high sound. Hazel and James were having a fearful expressions, however they were not frightened by it as they knew that it was false. It was false fear, but just in front of the Casper ghost, they made the acting very natural and realistic. Francesca had come downstairs so that the ghost could feel the presence of more people around him. The family did this as they knew that the ghosts aren’t afraid of people, but are afraid of another ghosts. The Casper Ghost was terrified at the sight.)
HAZEL: (to James) Oh no! This ghost has come again. He’s a great trouble for us.
CASPER: (in a breaking voice) Wh….who is this? W….. why is… he he..re?
JAMES: He is another member of our house. He’s a ghost. He is staying here since we have come here. Neither the housekeeper had told us about him, nor the people in the area know or heard of him, and we have no choice now. We are not able to find a new home, and now are habitual to him and his scary things to terrify us.
CASPER: (in a terrible and breaking voice.) Then… w…why are y..ou people say…. oh……staying he…re. Run!
(He ran out of the house to his home. He didn’t scare anyone for some more days, as he was petrified and tried to relax himself. After a few days, he learnt some spells to scare another ghosts, but he never visited that family as although he had learnt the spells, he was afraid at the horrifying sight. The family was then happy and got freedom from the ghosts)
