The Story of Kaikeyi

Once there was a sage named Dharmavidhi, a highly talented individual whose knowledge was as high as a mountain peak.

One day, while he was meditating, a random woman’s voice reached his ears. He wondered who it might be, and then an ugly-looking woman came near him and said, “Help me break this curse!”

The sage asked her what had happened. She replied:

“Once, I was a very rude woman. After I got married, my husband and I settled in a new house. Whatever my husband asked me to do, I would always do the opposite. My husband became annoyed with my behaviour, so he went to a wise man and told him everything.

The wise man said, ‘First, ask her to do the opposite of what you actually want. Then she will end up doing exactly what you desire.’

My husband thought this was a good idea and decided to try it. When he went home, he told me not to turn on the fan, but I did the opposite and switched it on. My husband thought to himself, ‘This sage was correct. If I keep asking her for the opposite, she’ll do what I want.’

This went on for a few days, and we both lived happily.

One day, we went to the temple. My husband forgot what he was supposed to say. Instead of telling me not to repeat the prayer three times (which would have made me do it), he told me to repeat the prayer three times. So I refused and did not obey him.

The demigods, who were watching from above, became angry and cursed both of us to become ghosts for eternity. They said that if we ever truly felt sorry for what we had done, someone would come to help us. That is how I became what I am now — a ghost.”

Dharmavidhi replied, “I will help you.”

He began meditating on Lord Vishnu. Suddenly, a golden chariot descended from the sky, carrying Vishnu’s guards, Jaya and Vijaya. They called them inside the chariot and took them to Vishnu’s abode, where the Lord himself was waiting.

Vishnu said, “Kaikeyi and Dharmavidhi, I have a task for you both. Dharmavidhi, you will remain in heaven and serve me for eternity. Kaikeyi, you must take part in the Ramayana. When I come to Earth as Lord Rama, you will have to send me to the forest so that I can kill Ravana. Will you do this for me?”

Kaikeyi replied, “My Lord, I have already done things that have displeased you.”

Vishnu said, “I know this will be difficult for you, but there is no choice. Even though people will be angry with you, you must bear it.”

Kaikeyi answered, “Very well, I will do it. I will surrender all my worries to you.”

And that is the story of Kaikeyi.
