Krishna lifting Govardhan Mountain

Once upon a time, there was a small village called Brindavan. In that village, there lived a boy named Krishna. Krishna was a kind and respectful boy.

One day, Krishna’s father, Nandan, was talking with some saints. The saints informed Nandan, “We should do pooja for Indra Dev, because he gives us everything. You have an invitation for the pooja, and you should also bring all the ghee that you have.”

Nandan was thinking about the saints’ words — how could they offer all the ghee for the pooja? Then Krishna asked his father, “But Father, Govardhan Mountain gives us everything we need to live here. Because of Govardhan Mountain, we get water, fresh air, and food to eat. Then why do we need to pray to Indra Dev and offer all our ghee?”

The saints had no answer for Krishna’s words, but they said, “We don’t know how you are going to bring the ghee, but you must offer it.” Saying this, all the saints left that place.

Nandan thought that if he listened to children, he might make wrong decisions. So he decided not to listen to Krishna. Nandan went to participate in the pooja along with his family to offer the ghee.

Krishna did not like this. When Krishna went to Indra Dev’s pooja, he told his brother Balaram to drink all the ghee silently. As Krishna said, Balaram hid behind the ghee pots and drank all the ghee. When a sage came to take the ghee pots for the pooja, Krishna rushed over and filled the empty pots with muddy water.

The sage took one pot of muddy water and poured it into the Vedic fire ritual. Due to the muddy water, the fire went out, and Indra Dev became angry. Indra Dev suddenly started a heavy rain with storms. Within minutes, the entire Brindavan was filled with water, and all the houses began to collapse. The people of Brindavan had no place to live.

Krishna prayed to Govardhan Mountain and, with the little finger of his left hand, lifted the great mountain. He stood like that for seven days, calling all the people to stay under Govardhan Mountain. Indra Dev was furious and increased the rain — it poured continuously for the whole seven days.

At last, Indra threw a big fireball at them. Then Krishna began to play his flute, and the fireball that was coming toward them was drawn into Krishna’s flute. Indra Dev was astonished — how could Krishna so easily handle such a powerful fireball? Finally, he realized that Krishna was not an ordinary boy but Lord Vishnu himself.

Indra Dev went to Krishna and said, “Oh Krishna, I am so sorry! You have opened my eyes.”

Krishna said, “It’s okay, Indra Dev. Never do such things again.”

Indra Dev then praised Krishna with the name Govinda. The rain stopped, the weather became calm, and Krishna placed Govardhan Mountain back on the ground. All the people of Brindavan returned to their homes, rebuilt their lives, and began to live happily with their families. From that day on, they offered prayers to Govardhan Mountain every year.

Moral: Never pray only to God — offer your respect and kindness toward nature as well.
