Why Rainforests Matter
Imagine you are a monkey and suddenly your home falls down. How would you feel? This is
what happens to animals every day when trees are cut down. Many animals depend on the
rainforest to survive, which is why protecting it is so important.
Trees are very important because they give us oxygen to breathe, without which animals and
humans cannot survive. About 30% of the world’s oxygen is produced in the Amazon
rainforest. Without trees, life on Earth would become extremely difficult.
Every day, thousands of trees are cut down. Every second, the rainforest loses trees the size
of 60 tennis courts, and every minute it loses 50 football fields. This means many animals
lose their homes, and the rainforest becomes smaller and smaller over time.
Rainforests are also important for medicine. About 25% of modern medicine comes from
rainforest plants. People have used these plants for hundreds of years to help cure illnesses.
If the rainforest is destroyed, we may lose medicines that can save lives forever.
That is why we must take care of the rainforest. When we protect the rainforest, we protect
animals, people, and the Earth. If we do not act now, it will affect nature and the economy.
Saving the rainforest today ensures a healthier future for everyone.
