Essay – Guru Purnima
Guru Purnima is one of the most important and meaningful festivals in India. It is celebrated to show love, respect and gratitude towards our gurus or teachers. This special day usually comes in the month of July, on the full moon day, which is called “Purnima” in Hindi. The word “Guru” means a teacher or guide and “Purnima” means the full moon. So Guru Purnima means the full moon day to honour our gurus.
This day is not only about school teachers but all those who teach us something valuable in life. It can be our parents, grandparents, spiritual leaders or even a friend who teaches us something good. In ancient India students used to go and live with their gurus in “Gurukuls.” There they learned everything from studies to how to behave, how to live with discipline and how to be kind and helpful.
Guru Purnima is also connected to the great sage Maharishi Ved Vyasa, who is believed to have written the Vedas, Mahabharata and other holy scriptures. He is considered one of the greatest teachers of all time. That is why this day is also called Vyasa Purnima in his honour.
In modern times we celebrate Guru Purnima in schools, homes and temples. In our school, we have a small function where students give speeches, sing songs and perform skits about famous gurus. Some children also give handmade cards, flowers and small gifts to their teachers. It is our way of saying “Thank You” to them for teaching us and helping us grow.
Many people also visit ashrams or spiritual centres to listen to the teachings of saints and gurus. They meditate, pray and take blessings from their spiritual teachers. In some families, children touch the feet of their parents and grandparents to seek their blessings too, because they are our first teachers.
Guru Purnima is not just about celebration. It teaches us an important lesson — to always respect those who help us learn. A good teacher doesn’t just teach us what’s in the book but helps us become a better and kinder person. They show us the right path, especially when we are confused or lost.
I feel very lucky to have loving and helpful teachers in school and caring parents at home. They are always there to guide me when I make mistakes or feel worried. On this Guru Purnima, I want to thank all of them from the bottom of my heart.
Conclusion:
Guru Purnima is a beautiful festival that reminds us to be grateful to our teachers and elders. We should always respect and listen to our gurus because they are the light in our life. Just like the moon lights up the night, our gurus light up our minds with knowledge.
