The Moon Who Lost Her Light

Once upon a time, high up in the velvet sky, there lived a little Moon named Luna. She was not the biggest moon in the sky, nor the brightest but she had a kind heart and loved to shine down gently on the Earth below.

Every night, Luna would twinkle softly, watching over sleepy animals, glowing over quiet oceans and making shadows dance through bedroom windows. Children often whispered, “Good night, Luna,” before drifting off to sleep.

But one evening, Luna woke up feeling different. She looked down and gasped her light was gone!

“Oh no!” she whispered. “How will the owls find their way? How will the waves sparkle in the sea?”

She floated sadly through the sky, searching for help. First, she went to the stars.

“Dear stars,” she asked, “have you seen my light?”

The stars twinkled kindly but shook their sparkling heads. “We haven’t seen it, Luna. But don’t give up! Try asking the clouds.”

So Luna floated lower, where the soft, sleepy clouds were drifting.

“Clouds,” she said, “have you seen my light?”

The clouds yawned and stretched. “Hmm, maybe the wind carried it away. Why not ask the Wind?”

So Luna called out to the Wind. He came whooshing past, playful and curious.

“My light is gone,” Luna said. “Did you take it by mistake?”

The Wind thought for a moment. “I didn’t take it, but I did see something glowing fall into the forest below. Maybe it’s waiting for you there.”

Luna gently floated down, just above the treetops, where she saw something twinkling beneath the leaves. It was a little firefly!

“Oh!” Luna cried. “That’s not my light.”

The firefly looked up and smiled. “No, but I found this small sparkle floating all alone. I kept it safe for you!”

Luna looked closer. It was a tiny piece of her light!

One by one, more fireflies arrived each carrying a little piece of her glow. They had found them scattered all around and together, they returned Luna’s light.

With a soft shimmer, Luna’s gentle glow returned, brighter than ever.

She smiled down at the world, glowing over fields and forests, oceans and rooftops.

“Thank you,” she whispered to the stars, the clouds, the wind and the fireflies.

And from that night on, whenever you see the moon glowing softly, remember: even if you lose your light for a little while, with help and kindness, it will always find its way back to you.
