The Sad Ghost
Once upon a time, there lived a girl named Jane, who was a normal teen going to school. She had a younger brother whose name was Jade. He was in 6th grade. Both made a great team. Their parents, Julie and Jack, were sweet. They lived in a house a mile away from the city in Whitefield, India. They were from California but had to shift due to their father’s work.
They lived in a huge mansion. But what they did not know was that they were living in a haunted mansion. It had belonged to an old lady who had died years ago in a car accident. Her son wanted to sell the house as he was living in America, so he sold it to Jack and his family.
On the very first night, when they moved in, they heard strange noises that sounded haunted. They ignored it and went back to sleep. Jane and Jade were sleeping in one room while their parents were in another. The same thing happened the second night—they were hearing voices from the air.
This time, everyone was frightened. The noise was actually from the old lady who had died. The children ran to their parents’ room. They were playing games when suddenly the lights started flickering and then went out. Luckily, Jack found a torch in his drawer and switched it on. Then he saw that Jade was missing. They screamed his name multiple times across the mansion until Jade called his sister’s name from the dining room. They rushed there and found him. But they also saw that the dining table was a mess, though Julie had cleaned it earlier.
They continued to hear strange and loud noises until they stopped after five minutes. Suddenly, they saw a lady in a white sari right in front of them, glaring at them from a distance. She had a very dull face and a creepy smile, but while she smiled, tears ran down her face. Her feet weren’t touching the ground. Jane and Jade were terrified and hid behind their parents.
The parents stayed calm. After two minutes, Jack broke the silence with a question:
“What are you doing here? Who are you? And why are you troubling us?”
The woman in the white sari replied coldly, “Years ago, this was supposed to be my house. My husband, my children, and I used to live here happily—until my husband died. Though I was in a lot of grief, I did not want to move away from this house. It carried many memories that I wanted to cherish forever.
But my son wanted to sell it for a fortune. I refused, but without thinking about my feelings, he sold the house and shifted to Paris. I died while trying to convince him. When he was getting into his car, he pushed me, I fell on a rock, and I died. My son never cared about me and just left.”
Jack felt pity for the old lady and asked whether he could help. The old lady was shocked. She did not answer for a while, then tried to speak. She hesitated but finally gathered her courage and said, “That would be wonderful. No one has ever asked me for help. They all just left the house, frightened, after hearing my story, with no intentions to return. You are the very first person who has offered me help.”
Jack asked, “Then what shall we do?”
The old woman answered, “You just have to convince my son not to sell this house to anyone.” She gestured to Jack to call and talk to her son.
Jack hesitated but then called. A voice from the other end said, “Hello, how may I help you?”
Jack replied, “Hello, this is Jack, the person who rented your house. I just wanted to know if you are free this weekend because I would like to meet at the house.”
The voice answered, “Sure, I am free. But may I know the problem, please?”
Jack said, “You will get to know as soon as you come.” Then he hung up the call.
The old lady, who had been listening to everything, thanked the parents, cleaned the messy table, and disappeared into thin air.
Two days later, on Saturday, the kids were on holiday and playing in their room. At sharp 10 a.m., the doorbell rang. Jack opened the door and saw a young man with his wife and two children. Jack welcomed them warmly, and they sat on the sofa. Julie offered them some lemonade, while the children went upstairs as their parents had told them to.
Jack started the conversation. “So, how are you?”
The young man replied, “Oh, I have been doing fine.”
Jack asked, “I didn’t catch your name.”
The young man said, “My name is Karan.”
Then Karan continued, “Can you please tell me why you have called me? I’m in a bit of a hurry.”
Jack said, “Sure. I just wanted you to know that your mother asked us to call you here.”
Karan was shocked. “But my mother died five years ago in a plane crash!”
Jack said, “Look, even you know that isn’t true. Your mother has haunted us ever since we moved in. She told us everything that had happened before you tried to sell this house.”
Karan’s face filled with rage. He threw the glass of lemonade onto the floor, and it crashed into pieces. The old woman, who had been watching everything, grew angrier with each passing second. With rage, she floated all the shattered pieces of glass back together and then threw them at Karan. He screamed.
Jack said, “That’s your mother!” But Karan didn’t believe it. He picked up his children, asked his wife to get up from the sofa, and was about to leave when the old woman locked the door from outside.
She said to Karan, “You fool. You were born stubborn, but this is the limit! I tried to explain to you. You didn’t listen. Now I have asked someone else to help me, but still you are not budging or trying to understand what I feel. You don’t care about me. You didn’t even keep a proper funeral for me. You told a different story about my death to everyone. But at least listen to me once. Don’t you want your mother to be happy? If yes, then I have only one wish: do not sell this little property of ours. I have so many beautiful memories here, and I want to cherish them forever rather than let them die while renters keep coming and going.”
Karan’s face, once full of rage, had now calmed down. He listened carefully, but when the old lady finished talking, he screamed, “Whatever you do, I am not going to leave the property like this! You don’t know how much fortune we will get from your cute little house!” He mocked her.
The old lady’s voice now sounded like a volcano erupting. She appeared right in front of Karan, who still didn’t pity her. Then she slapped Karan hard. Everyone in the room was shocked. Karan felt embarrassed.
Still, he shouted, “I had a great reputation in the world, and I can’t let it die because of this small thing!” Then, unexpectedly, he slapped his mother.
Jack stepped forward and slapped Karan. “Who cares about your fame? You are not even her real son. If you were, you would never have thought of slapping her.” He slapped Karan again. “This is for being a jerk to your mother.” He slapped again. “This is for not respecting your mother.” He slapped him once more. “And this is for not understanding what your mother suffered and what she wants to make herself happy.”
Karan left with his wife and children, but while leaving, his wife, Meera, purposefully dropped a document that Jack noticed. After they left, Jack picked it up. Inside was a letter that said:
“This is the document that gives Karan the authority to rent or sell the house. Please burn this document so that no one ever enters this house without permission. Tell her that I love her.”
Jack understood it was from the old lady. With her permission, he burned the document. Then he asked his family to pack their bags, as they were about to shift. The next day, they got ready to leave and bid the old lady goodbye, whose face was now filled with smiles.
