Essay – Dusshera
I love Dusshera festival and it is one of my favourite festivals of the year. It’s not just about getting a day off from school or eating lots of sweets but it’s a festival that reminds us of a really important lesson: that good always wins over evil. For me and my family, it’s a day filled with excitement, bright colours, and special traditions that we all look forward to.
The most amazing thing about Dusshera is the story behind it. It’s the day when Lord Rama defeated the evil Ravana. My grandparents always tell me the story of how Ravana had ten heads and how Rama with the help of his brother Lakshmana and his friend Hanuman fought a long battle to rescue Sita. The festival is celebrated to mark this great victory and it’s a powerful way to remember the importance of standing up for what is right. It shows us that even when things seem impossible, courage and truth can win.
My housing society also arranges a small skit by kids to show the events leading to Dusshera. A couple of years back, I even got to play Hanuman in the play, and it was super fun! After the play, the biggest part of the festival for me is watching the huge effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakarna and his son Meghnad. They are so tall and colourful and they look like giant toys! Everyone gathers at a big field to watch the main event. At sunset, someone dressed as Lord Rama shoots a fiery arrow and the effigies are set on fire. As they burn and burst with fireworks the crowd cheers loudly. It feels like we are all celebrating together, watching all the bad things in the world disappear in a cloud of smoke and fire.
But Dusshera isn’t just about the burning effigies. It’s also a time for family and friends. We all wear new clothes and visit temples to offer prayers. The day after Dusshera which is called Dashami marks the beginning of the preparation for Diwali.
The celebrations and the happiness from Dusshera continue for the next twenty days until Diwali which is the festival of lights. It feels like the two festivals are connected with one leading us right into the other. Dusshera feels like the perfect start to a season of happiness, light and goodness. It’s a day that truly fills my heart with joy and hope.
