Essay – Janmashtami

Many people all throughout India and the world celebrate Janmashtami, which is a very important occasion. One of the most significant Hindu deities, Lord Krishna was born on this day. Depending on the Hindu calendar, this celebration typically takes place in August or September.

On Janmashtami, homes and temples are decorated beautifully. People clean their houses and adorn them with flowers, colourful lights and pictures of Lord Krishna. Many families set up a small cradle or swing, called a “Jhulan,” for baby Krishna. They dress up tiny idols of Krishna in new clothes and jewellery, making them look very pretty.

A big part of Janmashtami is fasting. Many people fast all day, and they only eat after midnight, which is believed to be the exact time Lord Krishna was born. Temples are especially busy on this day. Devotees sing devotional songs called “bhajans” and “kirtans” and chant prayers. There are special ceremonies and sometimes plays called “Ras Leela” are performed showing stories from Lord Krishna’s life.

One of the most exciting parts of the celebration is at midnight. At this time, the idol of baby Krishna is bathed with milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and sugar, in a ritual called “Abhishek.” After the Abhishek, the idol is placed in the decorated cradle, and devotees gently swing it, celebrating his birth with great joy and enthusiasm. Sweets and special dishes, like “Makhan Mishri” (butter and sugar, Krishna’s favourite) are offered to the deity and then shared as “prasadam” with everyone.

Janmashtami reminds us of the victory of good over evil and the importance of righteousness. It is a day filled with devotion, happiness, and a sense of community. It is a time for families to come together, celebrate, and remember the teachings and playful stories of Lord Krishna.
